James was described by his half-brother William J. Kelley, "Jim is a fine preacher and the strongest kind of Baptist.", in a letter to their sister Martha.
James married Laura Lenora Mayo, daughter of Elijah Andrew Mayo and Delana Or Delaney?, on Dec 24, 1874. (Laura Lenora Mayo was born between 1856 and 1858 in Georgia and died after 1920.)
